Former Oregon Ducks wide receiver Traeshon Holden was waived by the Dallas Cowboys this week, ending his chances of sneaking on to the roster of a marquee NFL franchise.

The move created a spot for veteran edge rusher Von Miller, who signed a one-year deal. It is another reminder of how quickly opportunities can vanish in the league, even for a player who once lit up Autzen Stadium.

Holden arrived in Oregon after transferring from Alabama and quickly became a dependable piece of the Ducks’ offense.

In two seasons, he caught 82 passes for 1,170 yards and 11 touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound receiver added yards after the catch and the ability to win contested balls, traits that made him a reliable target for Dillon Gabriel.

His 2024 senior year stood out. Holden posted 45 receptions for 718 yards and five scores while earning honorable-mention All-Big Ten honors. He exploded for 149 yards on six catches at Michigan, including multiple long gains that showcased his speed and body control.

In the Rose Bowl against Ohio State, he hauled in seven passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns, giving Ducks fans one last highlight-reel performance. Those numbers helped Oregon complete an undefeated regular season and reach the College Football Playoff.

Holden was never the flashiest name on the roster, but he was consistent. He blocked, ran precise routes, and produced in big moments. Oregon fans appreciated the way he bought into the program after his transfer and contributed to the Ducks’ rise in the Big Ten.

After going undrafted in 2025, Holden signed with Dallas as a free agent. He impressed enough in his first training camp to land on the practice squad and spent the entire 2025 season there.

A reserve/future contract in January gave him another shot this summer. A muffed punt in the preseason opener against Seattle, combined with the Cowboys’ need to add Miller, ended that opportunity.

The NFL is unforgiving. Roster spots are scarce and one mistake or one veteran signing can close a door. Holden’s college tape still shows a receiver who can stretch the field and make plays in traffic. Another team may see the same traits that made him valuable in Eugene.

Ducks supporters will remember Holden as a player who delivered when it mattered. His production helped Oregon stay competitive at the highest level.

Wherever he lands next, the Oregon fan base will be watching. The yellow and green still have his back.
