The Atlanta Braves organization confirmed Wednesday that veteran catcher Sandy León will miss the remainder of the 2026 regular season after being placed on the 60-day injured list by the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers.

The move effectively ends his year at the major-league and minor-league levels with Atlanta, where he had appeared in 21 games earlier in the campaign.

León, a 14-year major-league veteran, had been working at the Triple-A level most recently. The timing of the announcement comes as the Braves wrap up their series against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Atlanta entered Wednesday’s contest looking to avoid a sweep after dropping a 4-1 decision the night before.

The 37-year-old León has carved out a long career as a reliable defensive catcher known more for his work behind the plate than his production at it.

He has suited up for several organizations, including the Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Cleveland Guardians, Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers, in addition to his time with Atlanta. His most notable achievement came in 2018, when he helped the Red Sox capture a World Series title.

Over 580 career major-league games, León has posted a .204 batting average with 327 hits, 32 home runs, 152 RBIs and 159 runs scored.

Those numbers reflect the typical profile of a backup catcher who has lasted more than a decade in the game through defense, game-calling and durability rather than offensive fireworks. Whether he returns to the Braves or signs elsewhere in 2027 remains an open question, but his experience and familiarity with the organization could still hold value.

For the Braves, the news arrives while they sit atop the National League East with a 74-52 record through 126 games.

The club has been inconsistent of late, going 4-6 over its last 10 contests and holding a 32-29 mark on the road. After finishing the Twins series, Atlanta heads to Chicago for a weekend set against the White Sox.

The loss of León does not dramatically alter Atlanta’s catching depth at the major-league level, but it does close the book on a veteran presence who provided insurance throughout the first half of the season.

The Braves will now turn their attention to the stretch run with the players currently on the active roster as they try to maintain their division lead.
