North Carolina fans still have last year’s season-opening embarrassment fresh in their minds. TCU rolled into Chapel Hill and hammered the Tar Heels 48-14 in Bill Belichick’s college coaching debut, complete with two defensive touchdowns that turned the night into a rout.

Now the teams meet again in the 2026 opener — this time in Dublin on Aug. 29 — and TCU just handed UNC an unexpected gift.

The Horned Frogs dismissed projected starting free safety Jacob Fields for a violation of team rules, removing a veteran playmaker who was taking the majority of first-team snaps.

Fields arrived from Louisiana Tech as one of TCU’s top portal additions. He earned Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2025 after leading the Bulldogs with 92 tackles and intercepting three passes, two of which he returned for touchdowns.

Over his last two seasons he piled up 146 tackles, five interceptions, and 14 pass breakups while making 21 consecutive starts.

TCU brought him in specifically to replace Bud Clark, the All-Big 12 safety who was a second-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks — the same Clark who returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown against the Tar Heels last September.

Losing that kind of experience and production so close to kickoff is a significant blow to Sonny Dykes’ secondary. Junior Jordan Lester, who has far fewer starts and production, now appears first in line at free safety, with freshman Zach Taylor as a backup option.

Another returning safety, Jamel Johnson, who led TCU with five interceptions last season, will also see more responsibility. None of those options match Fields’ recent résumé or the first-team reps he had earned in camp.

For a Tar Heels team that was thoroughly outclassed a year ago, this is a tangible advantage. Last season TCU’s defense created havoc and scored twice; removing a proven ballhawk like Fields weakens the unit that will try to contain UNC’s passing attack in a neutral-site environment.

Belichick’s second year in Chapel Hill already features a more experienced quarterback situation, with Billy Edwards Jr. reportedly slated to start. Exploiting a suddenly thinner TCU secondary could be the difference between another lopsided result and a competitive opener.

The game in Aviva Stadium still favors the Horned Frogs on paper, but Fields’ absence is the kind of late-breaking development that can shift a matchup. North Carolina does not need to be reminded how badly the last meeting went.

This time, they get a TCU defense missing one of its most important pieces. For a program looking to show progress under Belichick, that counts as a meaningful break.
