The TCU Horned Frogs, one of the Big 12’s top football programs, have shaken up their defensive plans just over a week before the 2026 season begins.
On Tuesday, the program announced that free safety Jacob Fields is no longer on the roster after a violation of team rules.
A team spokesperson confirmed that Fields has been removed and will not return, ending what had been a promising start to his time in Fort Worth.
Fields had been taking the majority of first-team snaps at free safety throughout camp. He was widely viewed as the favorite to start after transferring from Louisiana Tech, where he developed into one of the more productive defensive backs in Conference USA.
In his first season with the Bulldogs, he led the team with 92 tackles, intercepted three passes and returned two of them for touchdowns, earning co-defensive player of the year honors.
The next year, he added two more interceptions, four pass breakups and 54 tackles. Those numbers gave TCU a veteran with 14 career pass breakups and five interceptions.
A Texas native who starred at Melissa High School as a three-star recruit, Fields also brought reliability. He had started 21 consecutive games before arriving at TCU.
The Horned Frogs had counted on him to replace Bud Clark, the previous starter at the position who was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.
That plan is now obsolete. Head coach Sonny Dykes and defensive coordinator Andy Avalos must find a new starter at free safety in their 4-2-5 scheme.
Junior Jordan Lester, who had already been competing with Fields during the offseason, now stands as the clear front-runner. True freshman Zach Taylor, a three-star prospect from Katy Jordan High School, is expected to provide the primary backup.
The timing adds pressure. TCU opens the season on August 29 in Dublin against North Carolina and first-year college coach Bill Belichick. Last year, the Horned Frogs handled the Tar Heels 48-14 in Belichick’s debut.
The program now heads into that game without one of its most experienced defensive pieces, but the remaining options give the staff a chance to settle the position before kickoff.
