Richard Childress stepped before the media on Saturday afternoon, marking his initial public comments since the passing of Kyle Busch. The longtime team owner appeared somber as he reflected on the sudden void left in the NASCAR community.

In the wake of the tragedy, significant changes have taken place within the organization. The familiar No. 8 machine has been retired, giving way to the No. 33 entry now piloted by Austin Hill as the team moves forward under difficult circumstances.

This particular race weekend had held special anticipation for Childress and his squad. Plans had been in place for RCR and Busch to publicly confirm their partnership would extend into the 2027 campaign.

Instead of celebrating continuity, Childress found himself confronting an unimaginable loss of one of stock car racing’s most accomplished figures.

Childress shared insights from a private discussion he held with Busch just days before the fatal events. Their phone conversation on Tuesday evening centered on future ambitions and a renewed push for the current year, highlighting the strong bond and mutual belief between driver and owner.

“I talked to Kyle, Tuesday night before everything went down Wednesday night and Thursday, and we had a great conversation talking about how he said, ‘You give me cars like you gave me the last three weeks,’ he said, ‘I will make the Chase this year.’ I mean, we were that confident,” Childress said to the media.

“Both of us had a lot of confidence in us. We didn’t have the year that any of us expected or wanted. We started out like gangbusters, and it just didn’t go. We’ve had a lot of opportunities and we just didn’t finish them off. But that’s a tough part about today even walking in here, I was thinking you know, what if he and I were walking in together, instead I’m in here talking and thanking the media for your all’s support.”

The team owner emphasized how both men entered the dialogue filled with optimism. Despite early promise, the season had unfolded with more challenges than victories, testing their resilience but never diminishing their shared determination.

Busch had launched the year on a high note by securing the pole position for the prestigious Daytona 500. Following an adjustment in crew chief personnel, the No. 8 operation steadily gained momentum, showing flashes of the speed and consistency that fans had come to expect from the veteran competitor.

As the campaign progressed, however, results failed to match the initial excitement. Multiple strong opportunities slipped away, preventing the team from building the kind of momentum needed for a championship contention run. Those missed chances now carry an even heavier weight in hindsight.

The motorsports world continues to grapple with Busch’s absence in the weeks since his death. At every venue, tributes emerge from both supporters and fellow participants, serving as constant reminders of the driver’s profound influence on NASCAR and the lasting legacy he built through years of fierce competition.

Looking ahead, the sport will undoubtedly feel the impact of his departure for the remainder of the season and beyond.

While Austin Hill assumes new responsibilities behind the wheel, the collective focus remains on honoring what Kyle Busch represented: raw talent, unyielding passion, and an indelible mark left on stock car racing history.
