Cleveland Guardians Announce Jose Ramirez Decision on Tuesday

The Cleveland Guardians will open a three-game set against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday looking to shake off a disappointing weekend and generate more offense right from the start of their batting order.

Managerial decisions often hinge on recent performances, and the Guardians appear ready to shuffle things after a 5-0 shutout loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday. One of the most notable adjustments involves star third baseman Jose Ramirez, who will move up in the lineup for the series opener.

Ramirez is slotted to bat second against the Giants after hitting third in the previous contest. The switch comes on the heels of a solid individual showing, as the veteran went 2-for-3 at the plate against San Diego. He also carries a modest two-game hitting streak into the matchup, giving the club reason to hope he can continue producing in a more prominent spot.

The full Guardians batting order for Tuesday’s game lists center fielder Steven Kwan leading off, followed by Ramirez at third base. Right fielder Jo Adell comes in third, with left fielder Angel Martinez hitting cleanup. First baseman Rhys Hoskins is fifth, second baseman Angel Genao sixth, designated hitter Travis Bazzana seventh, catcher Patrick Bailey eighth and shortstop Brayan Rocchio ninth.

Moving Ramirez higher in the order is not an entirely new concept for Cleveland, but the timing feels deliberate given the team’s recent struggles to score runs. After being blanked by the Padres, the Guardians need every available spark as they try to climb back into stronger contention in the American League Central.

Ramirez has appeared in 92 games this season and posted 10 home runs along with 38 runs batted in while hitting .236. Those numbers sit well below the production he delivered a year ago, when he finished with 30 home runs, 85 RBI and a .283 average across 158 contests. The 33-year-old remains one of the club’s most consistent threats when locked in, and the lineup tweak aims to get him more at-bats earlier in games.

Cleveland currently sits 5.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the division. Every series carries added weight at this stage of the year, and the Guardians will look to Ramirez and the rest of the lineup to generate early rallies against Giants pitching.

The decision to elevate Ramirez also reflects confidence in the surrounding hitters. Kwan’s ability to reach base consistently gives Ramirez opportunities to drive in runs or set the table himself with his mix of power and speed. Adell and Martinez provide additional right-handed and left-handed balance further down the order, while Hoskins offers a proven power presence in the middle of the lineup.

Guardians fans have watched Ramirez deliver highlight-reel moments for years, and many will be eager to see whether the second spot unlocks another surge. His recent two-hit effort against San Diego suggested the bat is waking up at a useful time.

Maintaining that momentum against San Francisco could help Cleveland avoid falling further behind in the standings.

Pitching matchups for the series have not fully dominated the pregame discussion yet, but the focus remains squarely on how the Guardians’ hitters respond after being held scoreless. Ramirez’s placement higher in the order is one clear signal that the coaching staff wants more production from its best players when the first few innings still hold the greatest potential for multi-run frames.

As the team prepares for Tuesday’s first pitch, the revised batting order will be scrutinized for results. A strong showing from Ramirez in the two-hole could validate the change and give Cleveland a needed boost as it tries to close the gap in the AL Central race.

The coming games against the Giants offer an immediate chance to test whether the adjustment pays off.
