Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has provided new details on the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, offering a clearer picture of why no arrests have been made more than four months after the incident.

The mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, leaving authorities and the family still searching for answers.

In a recent conversation with KOLD-TV that aired on June 1, the sheriff addressed the current status of the probe and expressed his outlook on the likelihood of locating Nancy, who is 84 years old and remains missing. He acknowledged the inherent difficulties involved in such matters, noting that progress often depends on extensive collaboration beyond a single investigator’s efforts.

“You know, these cases are difficult,” he said. “And it’s not just this case. A number of our cases come to us where it requires a lot of work from other people. It’s just not a detective goes out there, talks to somebody, and we can make an arrest.”

Nanos emphasized the delicate nature of the Guthrie case, highlighting how certain elements have extended the timeline significantly. He pointed specifically to the heavy reliance on laboratory analysis for digital evidence, describing it as a crucial component that cannot be rushed.

“This is a very sensitive case. But what really makes it prolonged is we do rely on labs for the digital part of this case, which is very critical,” he said.

As weeks turn into months without resolution, the sheriff highlighted an important upside to the methodical approach being taken by his team. He stressed that investigators are committed to following proper protocols to prevent any miscarriages of justice.

“If I were to say there’s a positive to this, it is that people are working, doing their best to stay within those rules so that they have that understanding that, look, nobody wants to arrest the wrong person,” he told KOLD-TV. “We want to make sure that DNA doesn’t just identify a suspect. It also exonerates those who are innocent.”

The sheriff further elaborated on the painstaking process, particularly when dealing with multiple layers of DNA evidence that must be carefully separated and examined. While this thoroughness may seem slow to outsiders, he views it as essential for building a solid foundation.

“So it’s a tedious process, we get that. And especially when you add in all the other complexities of one DNA on top of the other and the separation of that. It moves at a snail’s pace, I guess, for some. But for my investigative team and for me, we look at it as this is doing exactly what we need it to do.”

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson residence on January 31. Her family reported her missing the following day, February 1, prompting an immediate investigation. Federal authorities have since shared images and video footage captured by a doorbell camera, showing a masked individual on the elderly woman’s porch.

Throughout the ordeal, Savannah Guthrie has taken significant personal steps to aid the search. She has publicly offered a substantial $1 million reward for information leading to her mother’s safe return and has invested $500,000 in hiring a private investigator to supplement official efforts.

Despite these initiatives and the dedicated work of law enforcement, no suspect has been publicly identified as the case continues. Officials remain focused on piecing together the available evidence while urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

The community and the Guthrie family continue to hold out hope for a positive outcome as the investigation advances methodically.
