About a month ago, the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching position opened up after firing Darvin Ham. Plenty of candidates have been connected to the team, but one major name has emerged; Dan Hurley.
Hurley is currently the head coach at UConn, amid a dynastic run. The Huskies have won back-to-back National Championships and look to be in a position to contend for a third. There is certainly a chance they open the 2024-25 season as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
Alas, his loyalty to UConn is going to be tested. According to NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Los Angeles Lakers are planning to offer a massive long-term contract to him. Preliminary contact with Hurley has been made and those talks are expected to escalate in the coming days.
Wojnarowski shared that Dan Hurley has been in the running for this position since the job opened. His name wasn’t circulating in rumors, as Los Angeles did a good job of keeping things close to the vest.
There is a lot that the Los Angeles Lakers like about what Dan Hurley brings to a team. His player development has been elite in recent seasons, turning recruits into bonafide pro prospects. His game planning and scheme offensively is something the franchise loves as well.
It would be interesting to see how the relationship between the Los Angeles Lakers and Dan Hurley would go. His coaching style, which has been successful with teenagers in high school and college, is one that may wear on NBA players during an 82-game season.
At 51 years old, how much adapting to his style would occur? It would also be a huge risk taking over a LeBron James-led team knowing his playing days are coming near an end. The Los Angeles Lakers are going to have to offer a historic, break-the-bank kind of deal to get Dan Hurley to leave Storrs and the dominant program he has built.
