The Philadelphia 76ers have opened the 2026-27 season with consecutive comeback victories, but the first real examination of how they intend to manage an aging roster arrives Saturday when they host the Milwaukee Bucks.
LeBron James heads a five-player injury report that will force coach Nick Nurse to weigh short-term results against long-term availability, especially with another game scheduled in Detroit the following night.
James is listed as questionable because of ongoing management of lower-back issues and sciatica.
At 41 years old and set to turn 42 in December, the four-time champion has already signaled that the team will not treat him like a conventional starter across an 82-game schedule.
After Thursday’s 114-106 win over Cleveland, in which he logged 33 minutes and contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals while helping erase a 29-point deficit, James noted that conversations about the weekend’s back-to-back had already taken place.
He emphasized that the staff would monitor how his body responds before deciding on Saturday’s status.
The Sixers have started him alongside Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid in both games so far, creating a formidable offensive unit, yet sustaining that grouping will require selective rest.
Embiid, by contrast, does not appear on the official report and is expected to be available against Milwaukee.
The former MVP stated after the Cleveland game that he would not play both ends of the weekend, leaving open the possibility that Philadelphia deploys him Saturday and holds him out Sunday.
He scored 24 points in the comeback win, complementing Maxey’s continued scoring surge—28 points against New York and 32 against the Cavaliers.
If James sits, the offense will lean more heavily on Maxey’s creation and Brown’s scoring, with additional minutes potentially available for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jabari Walker.
Beyond the marquee names, the report lists three players as out. Dominick Barlow remains sidelined by a lower-back stress reaction and has yet to appear in a regular-season game.
Tacko Fall is dealing with a left quadriceps strain, and Ariel Hukporti continues to recover from a ruptured right Achilles tendon. Dean Wade, recovering from a left ankle sprain suffered in the preseason, is also questionable and could make his Sixers debut if cleared.
Those absences thin the frontcourt depth at a moment when Nurse must already navigate decisions about his two highest-usage veterans.
Philadelphia enters at 2-0 while Milwaukee sits at 0-2 after dropping consecutive games, including a Friday loss to Chicago.
For Nurse, the immediate task is to keep the winning streak alive without accelerating wear on players whose availability will matter more in April than in October. Saturday’s final decisions will offer an early window into how the Sixers plan to strike that balance across a demanding schedule.
