The National Weather Service has issued a fresh alert about the risk of powerful thunderstorms striking key areas of the central United States.

Forecasters indicate that conditions are ripe for intense activity that could bring significant hazards to residents across multiple states. These storms are expected to produce not only heavy rain and lightning but also potentially dangerous hail and gusty winds capable of causing widespread disruption.

The affected zones primarily include the South Plains and Central Plains regions. As the day progresses on Thursday, June 25, communities in these areas should prepare for the possibility of sudden, vigorous thunderstorm development.

Experts anticipate that the storms could intensify quickly, leading to periods of severe weather that demand close attention from local populations.

“Scattered severe thunderstorms should develop today across parts of the southern/central Plains, with large hail and severe/damaging winds possible. A more focused corridor of tornado potential should exist this afternoon/evening across northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas, where a strong tornado may occur,” the National Weather Service warned on Thursday.

Officials are urging heightened vigilance in states such as Kansas and Oklahoma, where the threats appear most concentrated. Residents in surrounding areas within the Plains are also encouraged to review their emergency plans. The combination of large hailstones and powerful wind gusts raises concerns about property damage, while the isolated tornado risk adds another layer of urgency to preparations.

Meteorologists note that the timing of the storms aligns with peak afternoon and evening hours, when atmospheric instability tends to peak. This pattern often allows for rapid storm organization, increasing the chances of impactful weather elements reaching the ground. Authorities stress that even brief periods of severe conditions can pose serious risks if proper precautions are not taken.

To help residents stay protected, the National Weather Service recommends maintaining constant awareness of evolving forecasts. Staying informed through reliable channels remains one of the most effective ways to respond promptly as warnings are upgraded or expanded.

When at home during a severe thunderstorm warning, it is essential to move to a secure interior space right away. This step can shield individuals from incoming hazards such as destructive winds or sizable hail. Bringing pets along, whenever feasible, ensures the safety of the entire household.

In workplaces or educational settings, people should steer clear of windows and avoid gathering in expansive open areas like cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums. These locations can become particularly vulnerable when strong winds or hail begin to strike, making it wiser to seek more sheltered spots within the building.

For those caught outdoors as storms approach, heading immediately into a robust structure is critical. Smaller outbuildings like sheds offer little protection and should be avoided. Similarly, seeking cover beneath trees is strongly discouraged, as falling limbs or direct lightning strikes could turn a temporary refuge into a dangerous situation.

Vehicles provide better safety than remaining exposed outside, yet drivers should still aim to reach a sturdy shelter if time permits.

By following these guidelines, communities across the threatened regions can minimize potential harm and navigate the stormy conditions with greater confidence as the day unfolds.
