Red Sox Plotting Another Big Roster Move After Sonny Gray Deal

Despite significant additions last year, the Boston Red Sox fell short of an AL East title and a World Series berth. Heading into this winter, the front office appears determined to change that narrative with another wave of impactful moves.

The first domino has already fallen: Boston acquired veteran right-hander Sonny Gray in a blockbuster trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. Sources close to the team insist that deal is merely the opening act.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Red Sox are seriously exploring ways to upgrade their lineup, with Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto emerging as a prime target.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden projects Realmuto’s next contract to land in the neighborhood of $34 million total.

“The Red Sox are considering signing up to two of these five big-time lineup enhancements: uberpopular Kyle Schwarber, plus Pete Alonso, Kazuma Okamoto and J.T. Realmuto, as well as last winter’s big pickup Alex Bregman,” Heyman wrote.

Pairing Realmuto with the Red Sox would represent a major upgrade behind the plate without exhausting the payroll, leaving room to chase at least one more high-profile bat such as Alex Bregman or Kyle Schwarber.

In 2025, the 34-year-old backstop batted .257 with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs for Philadelphia.

A three-time Silver Slugger and two-time Gold Glove winner, Realmuto has paced MLB catchers in games played in four of the past five full seasons, proving both elite offense and exceptional durability at the game’s most demanding position.

While most expect Realmuto to re-sign with the Phillies, Boston is prepared to make a strong push on a short-term pact—believed to be two or three years at roughly $18 million annually—that would satisfy both the player’s desire for security and the club’s need for financial flexibility.

If the Red Sox can pull it off, adding one of baseball’s premier catchers to an already revamped roster would send a clear message: Boston is all-in on contending in 2026 and beyond.
