Florida’s new coaching staff under Jon Sumrall received encouraging news this week in the 2028 recruiting cycle. Four-star wide receiver Malachi Lee of Loudoun Sports Academy in Leesburg, Virginia, has included the Gators among his top 12 finalists, according to Rivals insider Hayes Fawcett.
Lee, listed at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, ranks as the No. 9 wide receiver in the 2028 class, the No. 67 overall prospect nationally, and the second-highest-rated player from Virginia.
The update arrives as Sumrall prepares for his first season in Gainesville after replacing Billy Napier. Florida has spent recent years sliding from consistent SEC contention, and Sumrall was brought in to restore competitiveness on the field and in recruiting.
Sumrall built a strong résumé before arriving in the SEC. He posted a 23-4 record in two seasons at Troy and then went 20-8 at Tulane, including a College Football Playoff appearance last year.
Those results have given Florida fans reason for optimism as he works to rebuild the roster through both the transfer portal and high school recruiting.
Landing Lee would represent a meaningful early win in the 2028 class. The receiver still has a crowded group of suitors that includes Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Nebraska, USC, Texas A&M, Rutgers, Miami, Virginia Tech, UCLA, and Arizona State.
Florida’s presence on that list shows the new staff has already made an impression in a class that remains more than a year away from signing day.
The Gators have added several players to the current roster and have emphasized a return to national recruiting relevance.
A commitment from a prospect of Lee’s caliber would signal that the program is once again viewed as a destination by elite talent. For now, the top-12 inclusion is simply an encouraging data point rather than a finished product.
Florida’s 2026 season is about to begin, giving Sumrall his first opportunity to show what the program can look like under his leadership.
Recruiting success in later classes will help determine how quickly the Gators can climb back toward the top of the SEC. Lee’s recruitment is one of several that will be watched closely in the coming months.
