Former Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart experienced a tumultuous return to TD Garden on Sunday as his current team, the Washington Wizards, faced off against his old squad.
While the night was filled with nostalgia and cheers, Smart also confronted a fan, casting a shadow over the event.
Marcus Smart Says a Fan ‘Crossed the Line’

Smart, who did not play in the Wizards’ 124-90 loss to the Celtics, was reportedly involved in a shouting match with a fan during the fourth quarter. The altercation escalated to the point where Smart pointed the individual out to security, leading to the fan’s ejection from the arena.
“He just crossed the line. We all know, I don’t do line crossing,” Smart told ESPN. “You never want to see that, especially for a guy who’s coming back and has given the city everything he has.”
Despite the incident, Smart’s return was largely positive, with fans chanting “We want Marcus!” in appreciation of his nine years with the team.
The guard reflected on his deep connection with the city, noting, “The love is always there. From both sides—myself and the fans, the city. It’s definitely emotional coming back and you try to hold it back. But I love it. I love every last bit of it. I’m a part of the city—a kid to a young man.”
Smart was a pivotal figure in Boston’s post-Big Three era, helping the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals six times and the NBA Finals in 2022.
His departure came last season when he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a deal that brought Kristaps Porziņģis to Boston, contributing to the Celtics’ championship run. The Grizzlies later traded Smart to Washington at this year’s trade deadline.
While the Wizards struggle at the bottom of the standings, Smart’s legacy in Boston remains intact, marked by his intensity on the court and his significant contributions to the team’s successes over nearly a decade.
