Trent Grisham’s night in San Diego ended earlier than planned on Friday, when the New York Yankees center fielder left the game with tightness in his right hamstring, per the Associated Press.

The injury surfaced after a brief but eventful sequence that began with a leadoff walk in the second inning against former teammate Walker Buehler. Grisham tried to steal second and was thrown out. After the top of the third, he was pulled from the contest.

The Yankees immediately reshuffled the outfield. Rookie Spencer Jones, a San Diego County product from Encinitas, slid over from right field to take Grisham’s spot in center.

Heliot Ramos entered the lineup in Grisham’s place in the batting order and took over in right. The moves allowed New York to stay intact defensively while monitoring how serious the hamstring issue might be.

Grisham arrived at the ballpark hitting .211 with 18 home runs and 59 RBI. Those numbers reflect a season of mixed results: power that still flashes, but a batting average that has left him searching for more consistent contact.

Hamstring discomfort is the kind of nagging problem that can linger for outfielders who rely on first-step speed and aggressive baserunning, and Grisham has dealt with hamstring issues in the past.

Managers and trainers typically treat such problems cautiously, especially in September when every game carries extra weight.

The setting added a layer of familiarity. Grisham spent four seasons with the Padres from 2020 through 2023 before the blockbuster trade that sent him and Juan Soto to the Bronx on December 7, 2023.

Returning to Petco Park as an opponent, even briefly, underscored how quickly baseball careers can change cities. Friday’s game offered a reminder that the physical demands do not ease just because the uniform is different.

For the Yankees, the immediate question is how long Grisham might be limited. A hamstring that tightens after a stolen-base attempt can range from a day-to-day concern to something that requires extra rest or even a short stint on the injured list.

Jones and Ramos give the club some flexibility in the outfield, but Grisham’s experience and power from the middle of the order are not easily replaced over a stretch of games.

Baseball seasons are built on small moments that suddenly become larger. A walk, a failed steal, and a player walking off the field can shift how a club manages its roster in the final weeks.

The Yankees will wait for further evaluation, while Grisham begins the familiar process of treatment, testing, and deciding how soon he can run without hesitation. In a sport that never stops, even a few days of discomfort can feel like a long time.
