After locking up the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with a 140-109 rout of the Houston Rockets on Friday night, the Los Angeles Lakers are setting their sights on a championship run — and Luka Dončić made it clear where his expectations lie.
“That’s our only goal,” Dončić said postgame. “I think we have the team to do it.”
Luka Dončić Has Given the Los Angeles Lakers a Major Spark

Dončić, who arrived in Los Angeles via a stunning trade from Dallas in February, now leads a Lakers team that boasts one of the most formidable offensive duos in the league alongside LeBron James. The two stars give the Lakers a legitimate case to beat any opponent in a playoff series.
James’ health, however, will be something to monitor as the postseason begins. The 39-year-old forward missed seven games in March due to a groin strain and briefly appeared to tweak the same injury during Friday’s win. Head coach JJ Redick downplayed any concerns, telling reporters James is “fine.”
Though James has shown some inconsistency since returning — including six games with fewer than 20 points and just 32.7 percent shooting from three over his last 12 contests — his playoff pedigree is unquestionable. He’s expected to elevate his game with the stakes.
Since Dončić’s arrival on Feb. 10, third-year guard Austin Reaves has taken full advantage of the spacing created by the attention drawn to Dončić and James. Reaves is averaging 21.9 points while shooting nearly 40 percent from deep over the past 28 games.
Despite concerns about their size and lack of a true center in the rotation, the Lakers’ top-end talent puts them firmly in the championship conversation. Dončić is just a season removed from leading the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals as a No. 5 seed — an experience that gives the Lakers additional postseason credibility.
With the playoffs set to begin next weekend, the Lakers are riding a wave of momentum and belief that their superstar duo can carry them all the way.
