Los Angeles Lakers rumors in recent days focused on their head coach search. Despite courting him from the very beginning, it was only revealed in recent days that the team was focusing efforts on UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley.
Dan Hurley has overseen back-to-back championships with UConn, turning them into a powerhouse in men’s college basketball once again. But, with the collegiate landscape changing because of NIL deals, there were some people who wondered if the Lakers would be able to pry him away from Storrs.
Ultimately, their efforts were for naught. According to recent Lakers rumors shared by NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Dan Hurley has spurned the team and will be remaining the head coach of UConn.
Per ESPN, “Hurley told Wojnarowski on Sunday that the Lakers made a “compelling case” and presented a “compelling vision” for him to become their next coach but that he loves what he has built with the two-time defending national champion Huskies.”
The Lakers certainly did their best to convince him to come to the West Coast. Lakers rumors have pegged their offer at being a six-year deal worth $70 million, which would have made Hurley one of the highest-paid coaches in the NBA.
After the 2022-23 collegiate season, and his first National Championship, UConn signed Dan Hurley to a six-year, $32.1 million extension. The Lakers were reportedly willing to more than double that with their contract, but it wasn’t enough to get him to leave behind the program.
With a potential top-five team, the Huskies have a chance to three-peat next season despite three starters heading into the 2024 NBA Draft. The Lakers will now regroup and continue their search for Darvin Ham’s replacement.
James Borrego, an assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans, and JJ Redick remain top candidates for the job. The hope is that a new head coach can be found ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft later in June.
