As the Los Angeles Lakers continue their late-season push, Austin Reaves emerges as a key component of their strategy and a standout player this season, attracting significant attention and praise, notably from teammate LeBron James.
Reaves, who joined the Lakers as an undrafted free agent in 2021, has dramatically improved this season. He is averaging 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists while shooting 45.8% from the field and 37.2% from beyond the arc. His performance spike is highlighted by scoring at least 30 points in four of his last five games and maintaining an average of 23.2 points over his last 25 appearances.
LeBron James Endorses Austin Reaves for Most Improved Player of the Year

LeBron James has openly supported Reaves for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award, expressing his endorsement during a Lakers game, captured by Lakers reporter Mike Trudell.
“Has most improved come out yet? You deserve it, (expletive)!!!!” exclaimed James. He continued to advocate for Reaves, acknowledging his remarkable rise from an undrafted rookie to a key player averaging “a reliable 20, 5, and 5 every night.”
Despite the strong performances and James’ advocacy, Reaves faces stiff competition for the Most Improved Player award. He currently stands as a long shot behind favorite Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham and other candidates, including Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels.
Austin Reaves Continues to Elevate His Game

Reaves also set a Lakers franchise record recently by making 15 three-pointers over two games, showcasing his growing confidence.
“Just shooting with confidence,” Reaves explained postgame. “It’s obviously good when you see your first couple go in. After that, it’s just continuing to shoot the ball.”
The Lakers have shown they can be a formidable team when their players are performing at their peak. This was demonstrated by a recent rout of the league-leading Oklahoma City Thunder 126-99, in which Luka Dončić and Reaves played significant roles. This victory highlighted the Lakers’ potential as they gear up for the playoffs, aiming to secure a spot and make a deep run.
As the regular season winds down, the Lakers and Reaves look to maintain their momentum, leveraging their current form to clinch a playoff berth and potentially surprise many in the postseason.
