Green Bay Packers fans who followed the career of wide receiver Juwann Winfree got a familiar dose of roster-move news on Sunday.
The Houston Texans terminated Winfree’s contract, cutting the 29-year-old just two weeks after re-signing him to a one-year deal.
Winfree, a sixth-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2019, spent three seasons in Green Bay from 2020 to 2022. He arrived on the practice squad in October 2020 and worked his way into active-roster opportunities, particularly during the 2021 campaign.
That year he appeared in seven games and posted career-best numbers of eight receptions for 58 yards. He added one more catch for 17 yards in limited action the following season.
Across his Packers tenure, he appeared in 12 games and contributed on special teams while learning under coaches and alongside established receivers in a competitive room.
After leaving Green Bay, Winfree landed with the Indianapolis Colts (2023-24) before brief stints with the Texans in 2025 and a short Canadian Football League stop with the Saskatchewan Roughriders earlier this year. Houston brought him back on August 10, 2026, as depth amid injuries at the position.
The move proved short-lived. The Texans released him to create a roster spot for linebacker Caleb Johnson, according to reports. Houston had also recently added veterans Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones, further crowding the wideout group.
For Packers supporters, Winfree’s journey remains a reminder of the grind many fringe players face. He never became a featured target in Green Bay, but he earned respect as a hard-working depth piece during the Aaron Rodgers era.
His nine career NFL receptions for 75 yards all came with the Packers, underscoring that his most productive stretch occurred in Wisconsin.
As final roster cuts and preseason finales approach across the league, Winfree becomes a free agent once more.
At 6-foot-1 and with special-teams experience, he could draw interest from teams seeking veteran insurance.
Packers fans will likely keep an eye on where the former wide out lands next, hoping the resilient receiver finds another opportunity to stick.
