The Houston Texans have terminated the contract of wide receiver Juwann Winfree. The move came as part of roster adjustments during the final stretch of the preseason, with the veteran released to create space for linebacker Caleb Johnson and amid other depth signings.

Winfree, who has been in the NFL since 2019, rejoined the Texans on August 10 after a brief prior stint with the club in 2025. He was originally selected by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round (187th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft out of the University of Colorado.

Over his career, the 6-foot-1, approximately 210-pound receiver has appeared in 23 regular-season games with one start, totaling nine receptions for 75 yards. His most productive season came in 2021 with the Green Bay Packers, where he recorded eight catches for 58 yards across seven games.

He also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts from 2023 to 2024 and briefly with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL earlier in 2026.

The latest release marks the end of a short second opportunity in Houston. Winfree first signed with the Texans in August 2025 but was released the following month after landing on injured reserve with a hand injury.

His return this summer provided depth to a wide receiver group dealing with injuries, including a season-ending torn ACL for Jayden Higgins.

However, the Texans recently bolstered the position by signing veterans Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones, rendering Winfree’s roster spot more expendable as final cuts approach.

At 29 years old, Winfree has primarily contributed as a depth option and special teams player throughout his career rather than as a primary target.

His journey has included multiple practice squad stints and roster bubbles across several organizations, reflecting the competitive nature of NFL depth charts. The termination comes with the preseason finale still ahead and teams finalizing their 53-man rosters.

Winfree now becomes a free agent and will look for another opportunity to continue his professional career, whether in the NFL or elsewhere.

For the Texans, the decision aligns with ongoing efforts to manage injuries and add proven veterans as they prepare for the 2026 regular season.

The move underscores the constant flux of training camp and the premium placed on specialized roles and injury insurance at skill positions.
