Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers are poised to welcome a high-upside addition to their tight end room as Dae’Quan Wright prepares to make the unusual leap from the NFL back to college football.

According to his agents, the Cleveland Browns plan to waive the former Ole Miss standout, clearing the path for him to join Brian Kelly’s program for the 2026 season once he clears waivers.

Wright’s journey has been anything but ordinary. After going undrafted, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles before being claimed by the Browns earlier this month.

Limited by injury and inactive for Cleveland’s first two preseason contests, he never established a foothold on an NFL roster. That setback, however, created an unexpected opportunity.

Through a temporary restraining order granted as part of a broader eligibility lawsuit, Wright secured the chance to return to campus for one more season—making him the first known player to agree to play college football after signing as an undrafted free agent.

For LSU, the timing could hardly be better. The Tigers have long valued versatile tight ends who can stretch the field and create mismatches in the SEC.

Wright arrives with a proven track record: in his final season at Ole Miss under Kiffin, he hauled in 39 catches for 635 yards and five touchdowns. Those numbers reflect a reliable receiving threat with the size and athleticism to contribute immediately in Baton Rouge.

The move also underscores the evolving landscape of college athletics. Eligibility rules remain in flux following recent court decisions, and players like Wright are navigating new pathways that were unimaginable just a few years ago.

While the NCAA continues to contest broader fifth-year opportunities, individual restraining orders have opened doors for a select group of athletes. Wright’s decision to choose LSU over remaining in the professional ranks speaks to the program’s appeal and the competitive environment Kelly has built.

Tiger fans can expect Wright to bring experience and production to a position group that will benefit from his presence.

Whether lining up in the slot, as an inline blocker, or as a red-zone target, he offers another weapon for the offense. As the 2026 season approaches, his arrival adds intrigue and depth to an LSU squad already generating high expectations.

In a sport defined by constant change, Wright’s path from the NFL practice squad back to Death Valley stands as a striking example of opportunity seized.

LSU stands ready to turn that opportunity into on-field results.
