Boston Celtics Urged To Reunite With Big Man In Trade Idea

When the Boston Celtics made the NBA Finals in June 2022, big man Robert Williams represented a crucial piece and was the anchor of the Celtics’ stingy defense.

However, last offseason, Boston traded him to the Portland Trail Blazers in a deal that sent Jrue Holiday to the C’s.

In hindsight, it was a phenomenal trade for the Celtics. Holiday helped lead Boston to an NBA title, and Williams played in just six games due to injuries.

But could Boston reunite with Williams?

Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes thinks so, naming the 26-year-old a top potential trade target for Boston heading into the 2024-25 season.

“He’s been hurt on and off ever since, makes a tricky $13.9 million for the second-aproned Celtics and should be in demand as a trade chip for several other teams,” Hughes wrote of Williams. “But Boston’s center rotation feels fragile, and Williams was once viewed as a key piece of the team.”

The C’s will be without Kristaps Porzingis for at least the first couple of months of the year as he recovers from offseason foot surgery, so they could certainly use another piece in their frontcourt.

But is Williams really the answer?

The Texas A&M product dealt with rampant injury issues throughout his five-year tenure in Beantown, playing in 50 games just twice during that span. He maxed out at 61 contests in 2021-22.

There is no denying Williams’ impact when he is healthy. After all, he made Second-Team All-Defense three years ago. But that’s just the thing: Williams is rarely on the floor, and sometimes, availability is the best ability.

If the Boston Celtics are going to add another big man to their frontline, it probably won’t be Williams.
