Joel Embiid stepped into a larger playmaking role Saturday night as the Philadelphia 76ers hosted the Milwaukee Bucks without LeBron James.
James sat out to manage lower-back and sciatica issues on the front end of a weekend back-to-back, leaving the offense to run more frequently through the former MVP.
Embiid responded with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, recording the 11th triple-double of his career in a 127-116 victory that improved Philadelphia to 3-0.
The performance marked a clear shift in how the Sixers operated without James.
Embiid facilitated early and often, finding teammates for open looks while still shouldering a heavy scoring load.
One of the night’s defining sequences came late when he grabbed an offensive rebound and delivered the assist that completed the triple-double, setting up a three-pointer that helped seal the result.
He logged 36 minutes, a workload that reflects both the team’s need for his presence and the ongoing management of his minutes early in the season.
That heavy night of work immediately raised questions about Sunday’s game against the Detroit Pistons, the second half of the back-to-back. Coach Nick Nurse indicated that no final decision had been made, though Embiid’s 36 minutes on Saturday made him a strong candidate to sit.
The organization has been deliberate about protecting its stars, particularly Embiid, whose availability has been a central storyline in recent years.
Sitting the second night of consecutive games has become a common approach for him, aimed at preserving health over the long season.
Embiid, however, made his preference to Nurse clear in the postgame media session.
“I actually wanna play tomorrow. Can you guys put some pressure on them?” Embiid told reporters.
The comment, aimed at Nurse and the medical staff, captured both his competitive desire and the familiar tension between a player’s eagerness and the team’s caution.
He has spoken before about wanting to be on the floor as much as possible, even as the Sixers prioritize recovery and load management.
The outcome of that conversation will shape how Philadelphia approaches the Pistons.
With James expected to return, the Sixers could lean on a different combination, but Embiid’s ability to create for others when James is out underscores the flexibility the roster has shown early on.
For now, the triple-double stands as evidence that the big man remains capable of shouldering significant responsibility, even if the organization ultimately decides the smarter course is rest on Sunday.
