The Dallas Cowboys added veteran quarterback Kyle Trask to their practice squad this week, restoring a third option under center ahead of Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, via the NFL transaction wire.

The move fills the vacancy created when the Eagles signed Joe Milton III off Dallas’ practice squad to their active roster.

Philadelphia needed help after starter Jalen Hurts suffered a season-ending injury involving blood clots that began in his leg during an international game in London and progressed to his lungs.

Milton is expected to serve as the Eagles’ No. 2 behind their new starter this week.

Trask, 28, arrives as a familiar but lightly used NFL name. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him in the second round (64th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Florida.

He spent several seasons primarily behind Tom Brady and later Baker Mayfield, appearing in seven games without a start. His career totals are modest: 4 completions on 11 attempts for 28 yards.

After the Buccaneers released him ahead of the 2025 season, Trask spent time on the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad and later attended training camp with the Carolina Panthers before being waived at the end of preseason on August 30. He had remained a free agent until Dallas called.

College success once suggested a brighter trajectory.

In 2020, Trask led the NCAA with 43 touchdown passes while throwing for 4,283 yards, finishing fourth in Heisman Trophy voting and earning second-team All-American honors.

Across his Florida career he completed 67.9% of his passes for roughly 7,386 yards, 69 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.

For the Cowboys, who sit at 2-4 after a 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, the addition is about depth rather than immediate competition.

Dak Prescott remains the starter, with Sam Howell as the primary backup on the active roster. Trask will serve as an emergency option on the practice squad and is unlikely to see the field unless injuries strike.

The club also promoted safety Juanyeh Thomas to the active roster from the practice squad (after he exhausted his three elevations) and waived cornerback Caelen Carson in corresponding moves.

As Dallas prepares for a key NFC East matchup in Philadelphia, Trask’s signing simply ensures the quarterback room stays intact.

At this stage of his career, the former Heisman finalist is a low-risk depth piece for a team still searching for consistency on both sides of the ball.
