Florida State officials continue to back head coach Mike Norvell despite another disappointing start, according to a recent assessment that describes his status as hot but slowly cooling.
The Athletic reported this week that an industry source indicated the Seminoles’ leadership prefers to retain Norvell after the team opened the 2026 season 3-4. The assessment shifted his hot-seat rating following a competitive double-overtime loss at Miami.
“They want to keep him,” the source told The Athletic. “They know they need to put more into the program. They’re playing better. He just can’t seem to catch a break.”
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman wrote that a blowout at Miami “could’ve led to more tough conversations for the Seminoles brass. But instead, Florida State gave now-No. 1 Miami all it could handle.” He added that the team “clearly has not quit on Norvell, and that matters,” pointing to a tough game at Alabama, a 31-point win over Virginia and a three-point loss to then-No. 19 SMU.
Norvell’s estimated buyout of around $50 million remains a major financial factor for Florida State as it weighs options during a bye week.
The Seminoles sit at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC play after losses to Louisville and Miami. They defeated New Mexico State 34-17, fell 27-24 to SMU, lost 50-36 at Alabama, beat Central Arkansas 34-7 and topped Virginia 38-7 before the recent setbacks.
Norvell acknowledged after the Miami game that close results fall short of the program’s standards.
“We had our chances, and we’re not in the business of being close. We’re not in any moral victories of it,” Norvell said.
Florida State is 10-21 over the past three seasons, including a 4-16 mark in ACC play. The program has not recorded a true road victory since November 2023.
The Seminoles average 31.6 points per game this season while allowing 27.9. They host Clemson on Oct. 31 before traveling to Boston College and Pitt, then return home against NC State and Florida.
Five regular season games remain, giving the team a chance to improve its record and address questions about consistency.
Norvell is in his seventh season at Florida State, where he previously guided the Seminoles to a 13-1 campaign and ACC title in 2023. National outlets had listed him among coaches on the hot seat entering this year.
The recent report suggests administration support has not shifted dramatically despite fan frustration after consecutive losing seasons.
