New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone offered a candid assessment of Giancarlo Stanton’s challenging season during a media availability on Wednesday, highlighting the slugger’s perseverance amid persistent injuries that limited him to just 24 games.

The remarks came after the Yankees’ postseason exit, in which they fell to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series following a sweep of the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card round. The club finished the regular season second in the AL East with a 93-68 record.

Stanton, now in his ninth year with the Yankees after arriving via trade from the Miami Marlins, has long been viewed as a central piece of the lineup when healthy.

His power and presence have defined much of his career, which includes a 2017 National League MVP award with Miami, five All-Star selections, and two Silver Slugger honors.

In 2024, he played a pivotal role in New York’s run to the World Series, earning American League Championship Series MVP honors. Yet injuries have repeatedly interrupted his production in recent years.

This past season proved especially difficult. Stanton batted .256 with 23 hits, three home runs, 14 RBIs, eight runs scored, and one stolen base.

The limited sample reflected a year of setbacks that kept him off the field for the vast majority of the schedule. In the ALDS, he received only a single plate appearance off the bench in the series’ decisive game and struck out as the Rays closed out the series at Yankee Stadium.

Boone addressed the situation directly when speaking with reporters.

“Giancarlo comes to mind. Hurt all year and having setbacks. Even had a setback at late as late August or early September… Even in my brain, I thought that’s probably it for the season, and he kept fighting to be a part of the roster at the end,” Boone said.

The comments underscore both the physical toll on the 36-year-old and his determination to contribute down the stretch.

In 2025, Stanton had shown what he could still offer when available, hitting 24 home runs with a .944 OPS across 77 games.

That production, combined with his track record of delivering in October, explains why the organization continues to value his presence even as durability concerns linger.

For the Yankees, Stanton’s availability remains a variable heading into the offseason. Boone’s remarks framed the outfielder’s efforts as a notable example of resilience within a roster that navigated multiple absences en route to the postseason.

Whether that fight translates into a fuller role next year will depend on health and how the front office evaluates the lineup around him.
