The Philadelphia Eagles have moved to bolster their quarterback room by signing Joe Milton off the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, according to a report from insider Jordan Schultz.

The move comes as the team navigates the absence of starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is sidelined with a superficial blood clot and unavailable for Week 6.

With Hurts out, the Eagles’ only remaining options on the 53-man roster had been Tanner McKee and Cole Payton, prompting the organization to look outside for additional depth.

Veteran Andy Dalton had drawn consideration as a potential short-term addition after recently becoming available, but the Eagles instead opted for Milton.

At 26 years old, Milton enters his third professional season after being selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2024 draft.

He was later traded to Dallas in 2025 while still under the terms of his four-year rookie contract, which is valued at roughly $4.2 million and includes $183,316 in guaranteed money.

The Cowboys released Milton following training camp this year before quickly re-signing him to their practice squad.

His college career spanned both Michigan and Tennessee, where he appeared in 43 games and completed 400 of 649 passes for 5,353 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

He also contributed as a runner, carrying the ball 174 times for 661 yards and 12 additional scores. Those dual-threat traits were part of the appeal that led to his selection in the middle rounds of the draft.

In limited NFL action during the 2025 season, Milton appeared in four games and completed 15 of 24 pass attempts for 183 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also added five rushing attempts for 50 yards.

While those numbers reflect only modest opportunities, they represent the bulk of his professional experience to date and give the Eagles a known commodity rather than an entirely untested option behind McKee and Payton.

The signing provides the Eagles with another arm capable of operating within their offensive scheme if circumstances require it, while also preserving flexibility as they monitor Hurts’ recovery.

Practice-squad elevations and roster moves of this nature are common when starting quarterbacks miss time, and Milton’s combination of size, arm strength, and prior exposure to NFL coaching staffs makes him a logical short-term addition.

How much he factors into the weekly plan will depend on Hurts’ status in the coming days and the performance of the quarterbacks already on the active roster.
