The Los Angeles Dodgers’ bid for a third straight World Series title ended in the National League Championship Series, closing the book on a season that included a midseason trade for left-handed starter Tarik Skubal.

With the playoffs over, attention has shifted to free agency, where Skubal is expected to draw significant interest and command a lengthy, high-value contract.

While the Dodgers remain a logical destination given their resources and competitive window, crosstown rival the Los Angeles Angels have been identified as a potential suitor capable of complicating the picture.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently ranked possible landing spots for Skubal and included the Angels among the teams that could make a serious run.

The Halos finished with 100 losses, a franchise low, yet their starting rotation ranked in the upper half of the league in both ERA and run prevention value.

Even if José Soriano departs, Reid Detmers and Walbert Ureña remain under team control, and top prospect Tyler Bremner is progressing through the system. Adding Skubal would immediately elevate that group and give the franchise a clearer path toward relevance.

Ownership is another factor. Stan Kroenke is in the process of purchasing the Angels from Arte Moreno, and Skubal has publicly suggested that the transition could turn the club into a more attractive free-agent destination.

Should the sale close in time, the Angels might be willing to spend at a level they have not consistently reached in recent years.

A large offer for Skubal — who is expected to land a deal worth in the neighborhood of $400 million — would represent an early signal of that shift and could force other clubs to adjust their own strategies.

The Dodgers still hold several advantages. Their payroll capacity allows them to absorb a major commitment without jeopardizing the rest of the roster, and the core that reached the NLCS remains intact.

In Rymer’s ranking, the Dodgers sit second overall in likelihood of retaining Skubal, behind only one other club.

Continuing to field a roster built around established stars and recent championship pedigree gives them a strong recruiting case even against a newly aggressive division rival.

Whether the Angels can actually outbid or out-recruit the Dodgers will depend on how quickly Kroenke’s group finalizes the purchase and how aggressively it chooses to operate.

Skubal, for his part, has already expressed interest in the Angels’ potential direction.

The result is an offseason in which two Los Angeles clubs could find themselves competing not only for a division title in future years but for the services of one of the game’s most coveted starting pitchers.
