The Chicago Cubs are sending one of their most intriguing young bats to a higher level.
According to a report from Chase Ford of Milb Central, 19-year-old outfielder Josiah Hartshorn is being promoted from High-A South Bend to Double-A Knoxville.
The move comes as the big-league club prepares to open a weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field after a Thursday off day that followed a sweep at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Hartshorn finished his South Bend stay hitting .297 with 39 extra-base hits and 85 RBI. Across two minor-league stops this season he has piled up 23 home runs and a .939 OPS, production that has turned a sixth-round high school pick into one of the more discussed names in the Cubs system.
Only two 19-year-olds have even taken an at-bat in Double-A this year, which underscores how unusual the assignment is. One Cubs follower noted he appears to be the first Chicago high school draftee to reach Double-A in his first full professional season since Dyain Frazier in 1970.
The Cubs selected Hartshorn 181st overall in 2025 out of Orange Lutheran High School in California and signed him for a sixth-round record $2 million, buying him out of a Texas A&M commitment.
A switch-hitter listed around 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, he opened 2026 at Low-A Myrtle Beach and immediately showed an advanced eye, walking more than he struck out while posting a strong on-base percentage.
Promoted to South Bend in late May, he kept hitting, often as one of the youngest everyday players at the level. Since August his line has sat around .324/.450/.598 with a 1.048 OPS, seven homers, and a healthy mix of walks and contact.
That kind of climb has pushed him up internal and external prospect lists. Some evaluators now view him as a top-40 talent in the game, with a bat-first profile that could land him in a corner outfield or first-base role. Defensively he is still developing, but the power and plate discipline have been the story.
Manager Craig Counsell saw him only briefly in spring training and still came away impressed; the organization has been willing to move him when the numbers demand it.
The parent club sits at 81-66 and second in the National League Central with 15 games left. A 4-6 stretch over the last ten games has tightened the picture, but the farm system continues to produce encouraging news. Hartshorn will now face older, more polished pitching in the Southern League.
How he handles that test will say a lot about whether his first full season was a breakout or the start of something longer.
For a Cubs team that has spent years trying to restock its position-player pipeline, the teenager’s next chapter is worth watching.
