The New York Yankees will take the field Wednesday night without second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. after he left Tuesday’s game with a jammed thumb.
Chisholm departed after “jamming his thumb while sliding headfirst into second base, then making a defensive play the following inning,” according to MLB.com. He was “pretty numb postgame, may require additional testing.”
Manager Aaron Boone said the club would evaluate the injury further.
“We’ll see what we have in the morning,” Boone said.
The Yankees posted their lineup for the 7:05 p.m. EDT game at Yankee Stadium and Chisholm was not included. José Caballero will start at second base in his place.
New York’s batting order: Ben Rice at designated hitter, Cody Bellinger in left field, Aaron Judge in right field, Luis Garcia Jr. at first base, Spencer Jones in center field, George Lombard Jr. at shortstop, Ryan McMahon at third base, Austin Wells catching and Caballero at second.
The Yankees opened the three-game series with a 5-3 victory Tuesday. They improved to 82-62 and clinched their 34th consecutive winning season.
Judge returned to the lineup Tuesday for the first time in more than three months after missing time with a fractured rib. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and was replaced by Heliot Ramos after six innings.
The Yankees chose not to send Judge on a minor-league rehab assignment and are bringing him back gradually.
“It’s a great streak,” Judge said of the winning-season streak, “but I think everybody in this room is worried about championships.”
Colorado’s lineup features Jake McCarthy in center, Cole Carrigg at shortstop, TJ Rumfield at first, Hunter Goodman as designated hitter, Mickey Moniak in right, Kyle Karros at third, Brett Sullivan catching, Connor Norby at second and Zac Veen in left.
Right-hander Will Warren starts for the Yankees. The 27-year-old is 9-6 with a 4.16 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 133 strikeouts this season.
Right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano takes the mound for the Rockies. The 36-year-old is 12-8 with a 5.19 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 79 strikeouts.
Chisholm finished Tuesday 2-for-4. For the season he is hitting .232 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs and a major-league-leading 40 stolen bases in 134 games.
The Yankees sit four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East and hold a three-game lead over the Boston Red Sox for the top wild-card spot.
New York has gone 6-4 in its last 10 games and is 38-31 at home. After this series the Yankees stay in the Bronx to face the Mets.
Boone has emphasized building Judge back slowly with 19 regular-season games remaining. The captain started in right field and batted third but did not play the entire contest.
Ramos, who replaced Judge, hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning Tuesday that helped secure the win.
The Rockies entered the series at 55-89 and have struggled on the road.
Chisholm is playing in a contract year and is scheduled to become a free agent after the season. The Yankees hope the thumb issue proves minor so their regular second baseman can return quickly as they push for a postseason berth.
