The Baltimore Ravens made a significant roster adjustment on Thursday by officially placing quarterback Lamar Jackson on injured reserve, a move that could sideline the franchise cornerstone for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Jackson, who had only recently returned to the lineup following a previous injury, is now set to undergo thumb surgery, raising questions about the team’s postseason outlook and the durability of their dual-threat signal-caller.

At 29 years old, Jackson has long been the face of the Ravens organization since the team selected him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

His career path has included a fifth-year option valued at $23 million, a non-exclusive franchise tag of $32.3 million in 2023, and eventually a five-year, $260 million extension that locks him in through at least the next couple of seasons.

Under that deal, Jackson is scheduled to carry a $34.39 million cap hit in 2026 and a much steeper $84.34 million figure the following year.

Those numbers underscore both his importance to the franchise and the financial stakes involved whenever his availability is compromised.

Before the latest setback, Jackson had appeared in four games this season.

He completed 70.8 percent of his passes for 967 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception while also adding 144 rushing yards and a score on 19 carries.

Those numbers reflect the same dynamic style that has defined his career: the ability to stress defenses both through the air and on the ground.

The thumb injury, however, interrupts that momentum at a critical juncture, especially given that Jackson had only just worked his way back from an earlier absence.

In conjunction with the move, the Ravens placed backup quarterback Tyler Huntley on injured reserve as well, signed Austin Reed from the practice squad to the active roster, and elevated outside linebacker Adisa Isaac and kicker Jake Moody for Thursday night’s game.

The simultaneous loss of both Jackson and Huntley leaves the quarterback room thin, with Reed now positioned as the primary option behind center in the short term.

For Baltimore, the decision places added pressure on the rest of the roster to sustain offensive production without its most dynamic playmaker.

Jackson’s combination of arm talent and elusiveness has repeatedly given the Ravens a unique advantage, and his absence for any extended stretch typically forces the offense into a more conventional approach.

While the team has navigated stretches without him before, the possibility that this injury could cost him the rest of the season makes the current situation particularly challenging.

As the Ravens move forward with Reed under center, the focus shifts to whether the supporting cast can keep the offense viable until—and if—Jackson is able to return.
