Aaron Donald stood at a Los Angeles Rams podium Sunday, smiling in a black T-shirt, and summed up his first day back in the only way that mattered to him.
“It felt good to be back around the guys,” the three-time Defensive Player of the Year said after rejoining the team that drafted him in 2014.
Donald officially ended a 2½-year retirement earlier Sunday, agreeing to a one-year contract worth $20 million that can reach $30 million with incentives. Hours later he was on the practice field and then in front of cameras, looking every bit the compact, explosive force who once defined the Rams’ defense.
The 35-year-old last played in January 2024. He walked away after 10 seasons spent entirely with the franchise, first in St. Louis and then Los Angeles, citing the mental and physical toll of a career built on year-round intensity.
Those 10 seasons produced numbers that still rank among the best by any interior lineman in the modern era. Donald recorded 111 sacks, 543 combined tackles, 176 tackles for loss and 24 forced fumbles in 154 regular-season games. He missed only six games to injury across that decade.
He earned 10 Pro Bowl selections, eight first-team All-Pro honors and three Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year awards (2017, 2018 and 2020). Only Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt also won the award three times. Donald also collected a Super Bowl ring after the 2021 season.
PFF graded him 90.0 or higher in every season he played, a mark reached by just eight qualifying defenders league-wide as recently as last year. From 2014 through 2023 he generated more pressures than any other defender, finishing with 840 regular-season pressures on 5,470 pass-rush snaps.
The return was set in motion this summer when the Rams traded for Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Donald said the deal “for sure got me thinking.” Between them the two linemen own five of the past nine Defensive Player of the Year awards and a combined 236.5 career sacks.
Los Angeles already entered the offseason as a Super Bowl favorite. Quarterback Matthew Stafford won league MVP honors in 2025. Wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams posted elite receiving numbers. The addition of Garrett and now Donald gives defensive coordinator Chris Shula two generational disruptors on the same front.
Teammates who worked out with Donald in August said the time away had not dimmed his burst. One defensive lineman remarked that Donald “didn’t miss a beat.” The Rams listed him on their initial 53-man roster Sunday, the same day they finalized cuts.
Donald’s Hall of Fame clock resets with the unretirement, but he has made clear the motivation is another championship. Super Bowl LXI will be played at SoFi Stadium in February. A Week 1 debut against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia remains possible, according to team sources.
Coach Sean McVay had spent weeks saying the decision belonged solely to Donald and that the organization would accommodate him if he felt he could still play at his standard. On Sunday that standard walked back through the facility door.
The Rams now possess one of the most decorated defensive lines in recent NFL history. Whether a 35-year-old coming off two years away can recapture his peak remains the central question.
Donald, at least on Day 1, sounded like a player who already had his answer.
