Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has settled the quarterback question that hung over his first preseason in Gainesville.
Meeting with reporters on Monday, Sumrall named Aaron Philo the starter for the season opener against Florida Atlantic, a game that arrives in two weeks.
The announcement ends a competition with Tramell Jones Jr. that had stretched through spring practice and into camp.
Sumrall arrives after two successful seasons at Tulane, where he compiled a 20-8 record and reached the first round of the College Football Playoff. He even coached the Green Wave in that postseason game after already accepting the Florida job.
The Gators, coming off a 4-8 campaign in 2025 that included a 1-3 start and a late slump, are counting on that track record plus a wave of transfers to stabilize a program that has struggled to find consistency in the SEC.
Philo himself is one of those transfers. He spent the previous two seasons at Georgia Tech as the primary backup to Haynes King, completing 57.8 percent of his passes for 938 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also showed mobility, rushing 16 times for 95 yards and a score.
Those numbers do not scream finished product, yet they reveal a quarterback who has seen enough live snaps to handle the first-game spotlight. Coaches noticed his command during the Orange and Blue Game and throughout spring work, enough to give him the nod over Jones.
The choice carries obvious implications for an offense that lacked explosiveness last season. Philo’s dual-threat ability should allow Florida to stretch defenses both vertically and horizontally. His legs give coordinators another dimension when the pocket collapses, while his arm strength can force safeties to respect the deep ball.
Against Florida Atlantic, a matchup the Gators are expected to control, Philo will have room to settle in. Mistakes are likely; the hope is that the supporting cast and a favorable early schedule give him time to grow into the role.
The broader picture remains challenging. Alabama, Georgia and LSU still set the standard in the conference, and Florida’s roster is in transition.
Sumrall’s task is to blend new pieces quickly enough to stay competitive. Naming Philo now, rather than letting the decision linger into September, signals a desire for clarity and continuity.
Whether that clarity produces wins will depend on how quickly the former Yellow Jacket adapts to SEC speed and how well the rest of the Gators offense executes around him.
For the moment, Florida has its quarterback, and the 2026 season has a face under center.
