Oregon’s Dan Lanning Drops Gut-Wrenching Dante Moore Update

Oregon’s season took a sharp turn Saturday when the No. 13 Ducks fell 17-15 at home to the No. 21 UCLA Bruins.

The defeat left Eugene with more questions than answers, particularly at quarterback, where Dante Moore continues to recover from the concussion he sustained two weeks earlier against USC.

With Moore unavailable, Dylan Raiola received the start. The offense never found rhythm. Oregon committed six turnovers, and the ground game and passing attack both struggled to sustain drives against a UCLA defense that forced mistakes at critical moments.

Raiola was eventually replaced in the fourth quarter by third-string quarterback Brock Thomas, who sparked a late scoring push that nearly erased the deficit.

The final margin was only two points, yet the performance exposed deeper issues with ball security and consistency that a healthy Moore has often masked.

After the game, head coach Dan Lanning faced direct questions about whether Moore might return this season. His answer was measured and left the door open to the possibility that the junior could miss the remainder of the year.

“It’s a continued discussion,” Lanning said, via Zachary Neel of USA Today. “I don’t want to put words in my mouth, or Dante’s, on that. Something we’ve said from the beginning is that we’re going to move with an abundance of caution, continue to get out and check, but it won’t be just a sprint just to say, ‘Okay, he’s back out there no matter what.’

“We’ll continue to have those conversations. He’s been practicing with his team. You know, I anticipate that there’s going to be an opportunity for him to be back out there, but it would be unfair for me to say that right now.”

The caution reflects both medical protocol and the larger stakes surrounding Moore.

He entered the season as one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2027 NFL Draft class, and preserving his long-term health remains a priority.

Lanning has repeatedly stressed that any return will follow careful evaluation rather than an accelerated timeline driven by results on the field.

Oregon’s schedule offers little margin for further setbacks. The Ducks host Nebraska next week, then face a demanding stretch that includes a meeting with Ohio State.

Another loss would make a Big Ten title run or College Football Playoff berth extremely difficult. Even if Moore returns in the coming weeks, the Ducks must improve their turnover margin and overall execution if they hope to stay in the conference and national conversation.

For now, Lanning’s comments underscore that the timeline remains uncertain and that the program will not rush the process.
