The Houston Texans’ late-August roster shuffle took an unexpected turn when the team waived linebacker Marte Mapu with an injury designation, ending a short experiment that began with a modest trade last spring.
The move, reported Monday, caught some observers off guard because Mapu had been in the mix for a backup role. In camp, however, he never separated himself. Other linebackers simply played better, and Houston chose not to carry him into September.
Mapu arrived in April after New England decided he was expendable. The Patriots sent the former third-round pick and a 2027 seventh-rounder to Houston for a 2027 sixth-round selection, a swap that reflected how far his stock had fallen in Foxborough.
Drafted 76th overall in 2023 out of Sacramento State, where he was Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year, Mapu had shown flashes as a hybrid defender. He could line up at linebacker or safety, and he produced three career interceptions and five forced fumbles with the Patriots.
His best stretch came in 2024, when he started nine games after returning from injured reserve. By 2025, under Mike Vrabel, his defensive snaps dropped sharply and special teams became his primary job.
Houston hoped a change of scenery would revive that earlier promise. The Texans already had a sturdy linebacker group led by Azeez Al-Shaair and Henry To’oTo’o, with E.J. Speed back as well.
Mapu was meant to add depth and versatility, especially in nickel and dime packages. Preseason tape did not back that up. He struggled to stand out in a crowded room, and an injury further complicated his case.
Waiving him injured leaves open the possibility that Houston could bring him back later if he recovers and the roster needs another body. For now, it is a quiet admission that the trade did not pay off on the field.
The decision also underscores how thin the margin is for veterans on the bubble. Mapu is only 26 and still has the athletic traits that made him a mid-round pick.
Teams looking for special-teams help or a cheap hybrid defender may take a look once he is healthy. Inside the Texans locker room, the focus shifts to the players who did win the job.
Depth at linebacker remains a talking point around the team, and some fans have already wondered whether Houston will lean more on dime personnel if injuries pile up.
Mapu’s exit is a small story in a long preseason, but it is a reminder that even a former third-round pick can run out of runway when the snaps do not match the opportunity.
