With most of the club’s prominent starters held out for the second straight preseason game after heavy work in joint practices, the reserves took center stage and left the coach with a clear-eyed view of the roster’s limitations.
Asked afterward whether quarterback Drake Maye and other regulars still needed live-game repetitions in Thursday’s finale at Cleveland, Vrabel was direct.
“I do not think we have a very deep team,” Vrabel said.
The remark underscored the careful approach the staff has taken with its top players, balancing the need for preparation against the imperative of keeping the most important contributors healthy. Vrabel has not yet decided whether Maye and the first-unit players will see action in the final exhibition.
The admission carries weight for a franchise coming off a Super Bowl appearance and entering 2026 with championship expectations.
While the first-team talent gives New England a realistic path to contend again, Saturday’s performance served as a reminder that the margin for injury may be narrower than desired. Reports from the game noted thin spots at linebacker and along both the offensive and defensive lines.
An ankle injury to tackle Marcus Bryant on the opening drive further tested the offensive line, forcing greater reliance on the first-round rookie for the remainder of the night.
The front office has already taken steps that suggest shared concern. Earlier in the week the Patriots signed veteran offensive lineman Greg Van Roten amid uncertainty up front; he dressed but did not play against the Eagles.
The club also hosted free-agent visits from linebacker Shaq Thompson and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, both of whom spent last season in Buffalo and remain unsigned. Those meetings came amid absences and unpredictability in the defensive front seven.
With the August 30 deadline for teams to reach the 53-player limit approaching, additional moves remain possible as cuts and trades begin across the league.
Vrabel offered no guarantees of further additions after the win, indicating the organization may prefer to wait and see what becomes available.
His candid description of the roster, however, left little doubt about the area he believes still requires strengthening as the regular season draws near.
