Giants Announce Big J.J. McCarthy Decision Hours Before Week 5

The New York Giants enter Week 5 sitting atop the NFC East at 3-1, an improbable position given the season-ending knee injury that sidelined Jaxson Dart early against the Rams.

With veteran Jameis Winston guiding the offense in Dart’s absence, the Giants have claimed consecutive victories over the Titans and Cardinals, and they travel to face the Washington Commanders seeking a third straight win under Winston—something the 32-year-old has not accomplished since his time with the Saints in 2021.

That stability at the top of the depth chart has not stopped the organization from elevating a recent acquisition.

After trading a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for former first-round selection J.J. McCarthy in late September, the Giants have accelerated the 23-year-old’s integration.

McCarthy dressed as the third-string quarterback for the Week 4 win over Arizona, remaining available for a limited package of plays even though he never entered the game.

Head coach John Harbaugh had already signaled that promoting McCarthy to primary backup was “definitely on the table,” and the team made that move official ahead of Sunday’s matchup.

Winston remains the starter, McCarthy slots in as the No. 2, and Jake Haener—recently elevated from the practice squad—serves as the emergency third quarterback.

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has been encouraged by the progress. Speaking this week, Nagy graded McCarthy’s early grasp of the system an “A-plus,” noting how far the quarterback has come in roughly a week of concentrated work with the position coaches.

The staff has continued preparing a small set of plays that could feature McCarthy if the game flow warrants it, though any such deployment will hinge on how Winston performs and whether the Giants need a change of pace.

For now, the package stays in the plan without any expectation that McCarthy will assume full-game duties.

The elevation reflects both short-term caution and longer-term curiosity. Winston has delivered the necessary results to keep New York in first place, yet his statistical profile has remained uneven.

McCarthy, who lost the Vikings’ starting job to Kyler Murray and then the backup role to Carson Wentz before the trade, arrives with the upside of a recent top-10 pick and a connection to the Harbaugh family through his college coach.

By installing him as the clear backup, the Giants give themselves an immediate option if Winston falters while continuing the evaluation process that began the moment McCarthy landed in New York.

Sunday’s trip to Landover will show whether that option stays on the sideline or surfaces in limited packages as the Giants try to push their record to 4-1.
