The New York Jets are being urged by some observers to explore a major trade for Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., a 26-year-old talent entering the final year of his rookie deal.
Recent comments from NFL insider Jordan Schultz indicated that several teams around the league have inquired about Porter’s availability, noting his Pro Bowl-caliber play and the current market value for elite corners.
With the Steelers potentially open to dealing him, the idea has gained traction among Jets fans and analysts looking to shore up a secondary that still has unanswered questions.
Mike Luciano of The Jet Press argued that New York should at least make a call. The current options at corner opposite Sauce Gardner leave something to be desired. Brandon Stephens has not inspired confidence as a top option, D’Angelo Ponds has battled injuries throughout the offseason, and Azareye’h Thomas has yet to establish himself as a consistent contributor.
Porter, by contrast, would immediately become one of the stronger pieces on the defensive backfield and the best non-Gardner corner the franchise has featured since DJ Reed’s departure.
Yet significant obstacles stand in the way of any such transaction. The Steelers are built to compete right now. With 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers under center and publicly framing this as his final season,
Pittsburgh has every reason to keep a productive young corner rather than ship him out weeks before the campaign begins. Any deal would almost certainly require a steep price, starting with at least one future first-round selection and possibly more.
The Jets do possess multiple first-round picks in 2027, giving them the theoretical capital to make a splash. However, those assets are widely viewed as essential for securing a long-term answer at quarterback rather than filling a single defensive spot.
Beyond the draft cost comes the financial commitment. Porter is expected to command more than $30 million per season on his next contract, placing him among the highest-paid players at the position. Only a handful of corners currently earn that much, and adding another large salary could complicate the Jets’ salary-cap picture.
There is also the matter of production. Across three professional seasons, Porter has recorded just three interceptions and has not generated forced fumbles, recoveries, or defensive touchdowns.
He has yet to earn All-Pro or Pro Bowl recognition. While he is a solid and physical cover man, he has not proven himself a true difference-maker who transforms a defense overnight.
In the end, the Jets and Porter appear mismatched in both timeline and priority. The franchise’s most valuable resources are better reserved for foundational pieces at the most critical positions.
Other teams may choose to meet the asking price, but New York would be wiser to develop from within and address its secondary needs through more measured means.
