Trey Wright, a highly productive dual-threat quarterback from Frisco Lone Star High School, committed to the USC Trojans on Saturday, giving Lincoln Riley and the Trojans their first pledge in the 2028 recruiting class.

The announcement came less than a week after USC extended its first scholarship offer at the quarterback position for that cycle. Wright, ranked as the No. 23 quarterback nationally and No. 45 overall prospect in Texas by Rivals, chose the Trojans over a host of other programs that had pursued him.

Wright told Rivals that the decision felt clear once the offer arrived.

“USC just felt like home for my family and me. I have a lot of love and trust in Coach Riley, and I truly believe I can thrive and reach my full potential playing for him. I felt like the fit was right on and off the field, so when I knew USC was the place for me, I didn’t see a reason to wait.”

He added that the timing aligned with his readiness to lock in a school ahead of his junior season.

“I knew it was time to make it official. I just have a stronger feeling right now about where I’m meant to be.”

As a sophomore last fall, Wright produced eye-catching numbers while leading Lone Star to the Class 5A UIL state championship game in his first year as the full-time starter. He finished with 5,860 total yards, the most by any high school player in the country.

That total included 4,062 passing yards on 67% completion with 38 touchdowns against just seven interceptions, plus 1,764 rushing yards and 16 more scores on the ground.

Those statistics earned him widespread recognition, including MaxPreps All-American honors and district MVP accolades. At roughly 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 and 175 to 185 pounds, Wright has drawn comparisons to former Oklahoma star Kyler Murray for his ability to create plays both from the pocket and on the move.

Riley’s track record developing quarterbacks played a central role in the recruitment. Wright noted the coach’s history with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Caleb Williams.

“He’s coached guys like Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Caleb Williams, who can make plays with their arm and also create when things break down, and I feel like that fits exactly how I play. Getting a chance to be developed by him at a place like USC is definitely exciting.”

The offer itself carried special weight.

“USC was definitely a big one for me. Knowing Coach Riley is really selective with the QBs he offers and that I was his first in my class makes it really special … If Lincoln Riley calls you and you play quarterback, you have to listen. His track record with QBs speaks for itself, and then you add in everything USC is as a program; it’s definitely going to be a contender for me.”

Clemson had emerged as an early favorite in Wright’s recruitment. Other finalists included Missouri, SMU, Kentucky, Oregon and Arizona, among nearly 30 total offers. The combination of Riley’s personal outreach and the opportunities available in Los Angeles quickly shifted the momentum toward the Trojans.

Wright’s commitment provides USC with an early foundation for the 2028 class. Riley has historically been deliberate in evaluating and offering quarterbacks, often focusing on a limited number of targets who fit his offensive scheme. Securing Wright this early allows the staff to build the rest of the class around a signal-caller already in the fold.

Lone Star finished 15-1 last season and reached the state final for the first time in more than a decade. Wright has spoken about returning to that stage and chasing even higher individual production this fall. His dual-threat skill set and proven production at a high level of Texas high school football make him a significant addition for a USC program that continues to emphasize athletic, creative quarterbacks.

The Trojans have not yet signed a quarterback from the 2027 class, relying instead on the transfer portal in recent cycles. Wright becomes the projected long-term piece at the position and the first domino in what Riley hopes will become a strong 2028 group.

Wright’s decision closes a rapid final stretch of recruiting. After receiving the USC offer last weekend, he evaluated the fit for both football and family before making the announcement public Saturday through Rivals. The commitment marks a notable early win for Riley on the national recruiting trail.
