The Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark fought through a tight contest Saturday and came away with a hard-earned 90-86 victory over the Chicago Sky.
Kelsey Mitchell paced the Fever with 27 points. Clark followed closely with a strong all-around performance of 26 points, 11 assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block.
The win improved Indiana to 20-12 on the season and snapped a two-game skid. It also moved the Fever past the Atlanta Dream into sole possession of fourth place in the standings.
Clark’s afternoon included a moment that drew extra attention. Late in the third quarter she drove past Sky defender Natasha Cloud, absorbed contact and made incidental contact with an official near the baseline. Officials assessed her a technical foul, her eighth of the season.
Under WNBA rules, eight technical fouls trigger an automatic one-game suspension. That means Clark faces the prospect of missing Tuesday’s matchup against the New York Liberty unless the league reviews the call and decides to rescind it.
Fever coach Stephanie White also received a technical foul after reacting strongly to the sequence involving her star guard.
After the final buzzer, ESPN’s Holly Rowe spoke with Clark and Mitchell on the court. Rowe asked Clark about the technical. Clark made clear the contact was not deliberate and that she would wait for the league’s decision.
She finished the exchange with five words: “I’ll see you on Tuesday.”
Mitchell and Clark also discussed their chemistry.
“We take our bond serious…Our backcourt comes from love. I want her to be great and vice versa,” Mitchell said.
Clark enters the situation averaging 21.5 points, 8 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game this season. She has earned All-Star recognition in each of her three professional campaigns.
The Fever now turn their attention to a demanding stretch of the schedule. After facing the Liberty, Indiana hosts the Dallas Wings and then meet the Dream. All three of those clubs currently sit in playoff position.
Clark’s ability to create for teammates and contribute on the glass has been central to the Fever’s success. Her availability for the coming games carries added weight as the team tries to solidify its place in the postseason picture.
Indiana will monitor the league’s review process in the coming days. Officials have the authority to examine the technical foul and remove it if they determine the contact did not warrant the penalty. Should the call stand, Clark will sit out Tuesday and return for the subsequent contest.
The Fever’s victory Saturday provided a needed boost after recent close losses. Players and coaches now hope the technical foul issue resolves in a way that keeps their leading playmaker on the floor for the critical stretch ahead.
