Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently shared an observation that has fans and analysts talking about the physical transformation of one of his standout players.

Speaking with Jacob Hester on Sirius XM, Campbell described his surprise at seeing linebacker Jack Campbell looking noticeably leaner as the team prepares for the 2026 season.

The coach explained that he often reviews old training camp footage to track progress and changes among his players. When he compared recent clips of Jack Campbell to those from previous years, the difference stood out immediately.

In earlier seasons, the linebacker appeared bulkier, with Campbell estimating he looked closer to 260 or even 275 pounds at times. Now, while still a sizable presence on the field, Jack has shed excess mass and carried a more refined, athletic build into his fourth NFL campaign.

Campbell was careful to note that this leaner frame has not come at the expense of power. He still describes his linebacker as a “thumper,” capable of delivering the same forceful hits that have defined his play.

The change, according to the coach, has primarily improved his ability to get to spots more quickly and cover ground with greater efficiency.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Jack Campbell measured 249 pounds, and league listings place him around 246. The transformation Campbell described is less about a dramatic drop on the scale and more about body composition.

Coming out of college, the young linebacker still carried some residual bulk that has since been replaced by functional muscle. The result is a stronger, more explosive athlete who maintains the physicality required in the middle of Detroit’s defense.

Campbell’s on-field production has steadily climbed alongside these physical adjustments. As a rookie he started 12 games and recorded 95 tackles.

In his second season those numbers rose to 131 combined tackles. By 2025 he reached new heights with 176 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, and three forced fumbles, earning first-team All-Pro honors and a long-term contract extension that cemented his role as a cornerstone of the Lions’ defense.

With the team planning to place even greater responsibility on his shoulders in 2026, Campbell’s refined physique could prove timely.

A leaner, faster version of an already proven thumper gives Detroit another tool as it continues to build on recent success. The coach’s comments suggest genuine excitement about what this version of Jack Campbell might deliver.
