The National Weather Service has issued urgent alerts for residents in two northeastern states as powerful thunderstorms threaten to bring hazardous conditions on Thursday, July 16. Officials are closely monitoring developing weather systems that could produce intense lightning, heavy rainfall, strong gusts, and large hail across parts of the region.

These storms carry the potential for widespread disruptions, prompting authorities to emphasize immediate preparedness among local communities.

Meteorologists warn that the approaching systems may generate winds reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Such forceful gusts could lead to significant structural impacts in affected areas. In particular, forecasters highlight the risk of downed trees and power lines, which often result from severe wind events during summer thunderstorms.

“Expect damage to trees and powerlines,” the warning states.

Maine and Vermont stand on high alert as these volatile weather patterns advance. Emergency management teams in both states have activated monitoring protocols to track storm progression and coordinate response efforts if conditions intensify. Residents are encouraged to review their personal safety plans in advance of any escalation.

“Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with these storms. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature`s leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning,” the warning states.

Safety experts stress the importance of staying informed through reliable channels during severe weather episodes. Individuals should keep tuned to local news broadcasts or NOAA Weather Radio for the latest updates on thunderstorm watches and warnings. This continuous awareness allows people to adjust their plans as the situation evolves.

When at home, it is critical to move to a secure interior location upon hearing a severe thunderstorm warning. Approaching damaging winds or large hail demand quick action, and pet owners should bring their animals along whenever possible to ensure their protection as well.

Avoiding exterior rooms helps minimize exposure to flying debris or broken windows.

In workplaces or educational settings, people should steer clear of windows and large open spaces such as cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums when warnings are active. These areas offer less protection against high winds or hail, making smaller, interior rooms the preferred shelter option until the threat passes.

Those caught outdoors must seek sturdy shelter without delay as storms near. Temporary structures like sheds or storage buildings provide inadequate safety, and seeking cover beneath trees poses serious risks. Not only could falling branches cause injury, but trees also increase the likelihood of lightning strikes during electrical storms.

Vehicles offer better protection than open areas during severe thunderstorms, yet drivers should head to the nearest solid building if time permits. Remaining inside a car with windows closed reduces vulnerability, but prolonged exposure on the road still requires caution and swift relocation to proper shelter when feasible.

By following these established guidelines, communities in Maine and Vermont can significantly reduce their risk as the storms move through on Thursday.

Officials continue to urge vigilance and prompt response to maintain public safety throughout the duration of the weather event.
