The UCLA Bruins delivered a tale of extremes during the previous college football campaign, blending disappointment with flashes of promise that hinted at better days ahead.

Overall, the season proved challenging as the team finished with a 3-9 record, placing them among the weaker programs in the sport. Yet, the narrative shifted noticeably once leadership changes took place, sparking a late surge that captured attention across the conference.

Following the dismissal of head coach DeShaun Foster, the Bruins strung together three consecutive victories. This hot streak included a notable upset victory over the then-No. 7-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, a result widely believed to have influenced the program’s decision to move on from longtime coach James Franklin after more than a decade at the helm.

The momentum continued with triumphs against the Michigan State Spartans and Maryland Terrapins. However, reality set in swiftly afterward, as UCLA suffered a lopsided 56-6 defeat to the Indiana Hoosiers, who would go on to claim the national championship. That setback triggered a five-game skid to close the year, with four of those losses coming by double-digit margins.

In the offseason, UCLA made a significant move by bringing in Bob Chesney, the former head coach at James Madison. Chesney compiled an impressive 21-6 mark over two seasons at JMU, stepping in after Curt Cignetti departed for the Indiana position. His arrival has injected fresh optimism into the Bruins program and its supporters.

Analysts have taken notice of the potential upswing. On his podcast, “The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast,” Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt weighed in on the Bruins’ projected win total, viewing the line of 6.5 victories as an opportunity.

“They’ve got their quarterback back,” Klatt said. “I think that they are going to have a lot better roster. I think they’re going to have more continuity with their staff and head coach, Bob Chesney. I think UCLA is the first one to jump out at me. I saw (6.5), and I immediately, before even looking at the schedule, thought to myself, that seems light. I’m going to take the over there.”

Central to these elevated hopes is the return of quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Across his career to date, he has accumulated 4,858 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while adding 934 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground. His dual-threat capabilities could prove vital in elevating the team’s performance.

Nevertheless, the path forward presents substantial hurdles. Since joining the Big Ten, UCLA has struggled mightily, posting an 8-16 overall record and a 6-12 mark in conference play across the past two seasons. Transforming such a program demands patience and execution, even if similar rapid turnarounds have occurred elsewhere, such as at Indiana under Cignetti.

The upcoming schedule offers a mix of challenges and manageable opportunities. UCLA will travel to face the Oregon Ducks and Michigan Wolverines, then host the USC Trojans in what promises to be a competitive matchup. Additional road contests await against the Wisconsin Badgers, Illinois Fighting Illini, and Minnesota Golden Gophers.

While the slate avoids some of the absolute toughest matchups, it still requires the Bruins to secure victories in games where they may enter as underdogs.

Success in those scenarios could mark a highly successful debut for Chesney in Los Angeles and set the foundation for sustained progress in the competitive Big Ten landscape.
