Clemson’s wide receiver room enters the 2026 season with notable talent and depth, yet one name stands out as a clear candidate for the transfer portal if opportunities remain scarce.

Matthew Schmidt of Clemson Roundtable feels that Tyler Brown finds himself firmly on transfer watch as the Tigers prepare for the year ahead.

Brown arrived in 2023 as a three-star prospect and immediately made an impact. As a true freshman he hauled in 52 receptions for 531 yards and four touchdowns, flashing the kind of production that suggested a bright future in the program. Injuries then intervened.

Limited to six games and just five catches the following season, he never fully regained that early momentum. In 2025 he finished with 22 receptions for 191 yards, operating behind T.J. Moore, Bryant Wesco Jr., and Antonio Williams on the depth chart.

Williams has since moved on to the NFL, opening a theoretical path to increased snaps. Yet the competition remains fierce. Moore and Wesco Jr. head the group, while Tristan Smith, a 6-foot-5 red-zone presence who outproduced Brown a year ago, continues to command attention.

Incoming four-star freshmen Naeem Burroughs, Gordon Sellars, and Connor Salmin add further pressure, with Burroughs in particular expected to see significant playing time.

Transfer running back Chris Johnson Jr., a reliable option out of the backfield, further crowds the targets available in the passing game.

Schmidt notes that Brown, a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining, has already demonstrated loyalty by remaining at Clemson after the 2025 campaign. That decision reflects the culture head coach Dabo Swinney has long emphasized.

At the same time, it may prove costly for a player who once looked like a future NFL prospect and now risks sliding further down the depth chart.

The Tigers appear poised to prioritize their younger receivers, leaving Brown in a position where meaningful opportunities could prove difficult to secure.

If Brown again finds himself an afterthought in 2026, the portal would become a logical next step. The situation illustrates the harsh reality of modern college football: early promise does not guarantee sustained roles when talent continues to arrive.

For a Greenville native who once seemed destined for bigger things in orange and purple, the coming season may determine whether his Clemson story continues or takes a new direction elsewhere.
