The Carolina Panthers have made a bold and controversial decision regarding their franchise quarterback, Bryce Young.
After just two games in the 2024 season, the team announced that Young would not be the starting quarterback for Week 3. Instead, veteran Andy Dalton will take over under center.
While the decision may seem rash to some, given that it’s so early in Young’s career, the former No. 1 pick struggled mightily during his rookie campaign. Two games into his second season, he’s already finding himself on the sidelines.
This unexpected move has sparked discussions across the football world, with some arguing that it’s too early to write off such a highly-touted prospect.
NBA superstar LeBron James was among those offering words of encouragement. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), James urged Young to keep his head high and continue working hard.
James also emphasized that the situation wasn’t entirely Young’s fault, acknowledging the many challenges the young quarterback has faced since joining the Panthers.
Bryce Young hold ya head Young 🤴🏾!! Rooting for you and know this ain’t on you! Continue to put the work in and it shall prevail! 🙏🏾🫡👑

Truthfully, it’s hard to pin all of the Panthers’ struggles on Young. While the young quarterback has looked far from the standard of a starting-caliber NFL player, and his physical limitations are noticeable, the surrounding circumstances haven’t helped him.
His first NFL head coach was fired midway through his rookie season, and the coach brought in to develop him decided to bench him after just two games this year.
This decision seems to reflect more on the Panthers’ management and coaching staff than on Young himself. Whether this is driven by owner David Tepper or offensive coordinator Dave Canales trying to avoid investing more time into what they view as a failed experiment, the fact remains that Bryce Young was never truly put in a position to succeed.
From the moment he entered the league, the situation around him has been tumultuous at best.
It raises questions about the Panthers’ long-term strategy. Given that they traded up to secure Young in the 2023 NFL Draft, the decision to bench him so early is striking.
The Panthers gave up significant draft capital and resources to land their quarterback of the future, and now, just a year later, he’s already being pushed aside. In retrospect, the trade to acquire Young is shaping up to be one of the most regrettable moves in NFL history.
It’s possible that Young’s future in the NFL could see him as a backup rather than a franchise cornerstone. But giving up on a No. 1 overall pick less than two seasons into his career is a move that speaks to the disarray within the Panthers’ organization.
Decisions like this, which may be premature, are part of the reason the Panthers are considered one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL today.
While the immediate future remains uncertain for Bryce Young, one thing is clear: the Carolina Panthers’ choice to bench him this early could be remembered as a pivotal moment in a series of organizational missteps that have left them struggling to find relevance in the league.
For now, all eyes will be on Andy Dalton, but the shadow of this decision—and its implications for the franchise’s future—will undoubtedly loom large.
