Don’t look now, but Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are beginning to find their stride. On Wednesday, they defeated the Washington Mystics 88-81, winning their third game in a row and fourth in the last five games.
That is the first running streak of the season for the Fever, who are now 6-10 on the season. There is still plenty of work for them to do, but they have started getting on track after a disastrous beginning to the season.
How has the young Fever squad started righting the ship? In the opinion of Caitlin Clark, it is their confidence being on the rise. They are learning from some tough lessons earlier in the season.
“The confidence that we’ve been able to build from the last three games is, you know, continue to take a step forward and learn each game, and if we do happen to lose one, how are we going to respond?” Clark said. “That’s been a big thing for us, too. The last game we lost, we found a way to respond and string off three straight wins. I think we’ve gotten a lot better over the course of these last three games and we’re continuing to build on that.”
Caitlin Clark certainly did her part against the Mystics, scoring 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. She made history against Washington and in the previous game against the Atlanta Dream, becoming the first WNBA rookie to record 40+ points, 15+ rebounds and 15+ assists in a two-game span.
While Caitlin Clark is garnering all of the headlines, this isn’t a one-woman show. The Fever have played well over this recent stretch because they are getting contributions from up and down the roster.
Against the Mystics, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell each scored 22 points. Boston has been on fire, recording a double-double in two out of the three victories, averaging 22.7 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists with eight total blocks and steals.
The last two No. 1 overall picks in the WNBA Draft give the Fever a strong duo to build around for the future. While unfinished products, both Boston and Caitlin Clark are showing encouraging improvement.
Indiana will be tested in the coming days. They can prove how legitimate their turnaround is. The Fever are set for a five-game road trip, as they don’t play another home game until July 6th against the New York Liberty.
