LeRoy Irvin, the standout cornerback who became a cornerstone of the Los Angeles Rams’ defense throughout the 1980s, has passed away. The former player, recognized with multiple All-Pro selections during his prime, left a lasting mark on the franchise and the broader NFL landscape.

Irvin reached the age of 68 at the time of his death. News of his passing was shared on Thursday by his longtime Rams teammate and Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

In an Instagram post, Dickerson paid tribute to his friend and former on-field comrade, who spent 10 seasons with LA from 1980-89 before closing out his career with the Detroit Lions.

“Devastated to hear about the passing of my brother, teammate, and Rams legend Leroy Irvin,” Dickerson wrote. “Leroy wasn’t just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy. Rest in peace, my brother. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation.”

The announcement highlighted the close bond between the two players, underscoring Irvin’s impact not only as an athlete but also as a positive presence off the field. Dickerson’s words captured the respect Irvin earned among peers for his dedication and spirited approach to the game.

No additional information about the circumstances of Irvin’s passing has been made public so far, leaving fans and the football community to reflect on his achievements while awaiting further details from his family.

Irvin built a strong foundation for his professional career as a two-time second-team All-Big Eight selection during his time at the University of Kansas. The Rams selected him in the third round of the 1980 NFL Draft, choosing him as the 70th pick overall, where he quickly proved his value.

From the outset, Irvin contributed meaningfully on both defense and special teams. His breakout performance came in 1981, when he earned first-team All-Pro recognition as a punt returner after topping the league with 615 return yards and three touchdowns. That year also saw him establish a single-game NFL record with 207 punt return yards in one contest.

Throughout the decade, Irvin continued to excel at the cornerback position. He secured additional first-team All-Pro honors in 1982 and 1986, along with a second-team nod in 1985. Starting in 1983, he held down the starting role at corner for the Rams through 1989, showcasing consistency and reliability before moving on to the Lions for his final campaign.

In 1990, Irvin started every game for Detroit, bringing his professional journey to a close after more than a decade of high-level competition. His on-field presence helped define an era of aggressive defensive play for the Rams organization.

Over the course of his career, Irvin recorded 35 interceptions, including five returned for touchdowns. He also recovered 13 fumbles, one of which he took back for a score, and forced 11 fumbles. Additionally, he contributed four punt return touchdowns at the professional level, further illustrating his dynamic abilities on special teams.

Irvin’s legacy endures as one of the standout defensive backs of his generation, remembered for his tenacity, versatility, and the energy he infused into every team he joined.

As tributes continue to pour in, the football world mourns the loss of a true competitor and respected figure.
