New York Yankees Provide Brutal Update on Clarke Schmidt

The New York Yankees have been receiving incredible contributions from their starting rotation all season long. One of the players who has stepped up in the absence of Gerrit Cole has been Clarke Schmidt.

Clarke Schmidt has been excellent this season. He has made 11 starts with a 2.52 ERA. He has thrown 60.2 innings, giving up 49 hits and 20 walks with 20 strikeouts. 17 out of his 19 runs allowed have been earned.

Unfortunately, the New York Yankees will now have to find a replacement for him. As shared by Bryan Hoch, Clarke Schmidt is not going to throw for 4-to-6 weeks, according to manager Aaron Boone. An MRI was done on Wednesday and he met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Taking Clarke’s spot in the rotation for now will be Cody Poteet. Poteet has made one start this season, back on April 13th against the Cleveland Guardians. It was a strong performance, as he pitched six innings giving up only one run in an 8-2 victory.

In another update provided by Jack Curry of YES Network, an even bleaker outlook was shared. In addition to the news shared by Boone about not throwing for 4-to-6 weeks, Clarke Schmidt will have to build his arm up again.

That could be another month or so sidelined, so there is a chance we don’t see him back with the big league club until mid-August. Curry also shared that it will be Cody Morris replacing Schmidt on the roster for now.

This is a brutal blow for the New York Yankees. Their pitching staff has been a strength for the team, as their depth is going to start being tested. This was one of the risks the team knew they were taking when acquiring Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres, as they traded away a lot of MLB-ready pitching.
