The Detroit Tigers have released right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long and left-hander Bailey Horn while designating right-hander Yilber Díaz for assignment, according to the official MLB transaction log.
The moves came as the club cleared space on its 40-man roster after activating seven players from the 60-day injured list the same day, including outfielders Parker Meadows, Kerry Carpenter, Wenceel Pérez and Matt Vierling, shortstop Trey Sweeney, and pitchers Reese Olson and Will Vest.
The Tigers also signed free-agent right-hander Jacob Waguespack to a one-year deal, exercised their 2027 club option on right-hander Drew Anderson, and declined the option on closer Kenley Jansen, who elected free agency.
Outfielder Corey Julks was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo and became a free agent.
Gipson-Long, 28, appeared in 12 games for Detroit across the 2023 and 2025 seasons, posting a 1-2 record with a 5.44 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 51.1 innings.
He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024 and spent most of the intervening time recovering or in the minors.
The Tigers recalled him from Toledo late in the 2026 season after he logged significant innings at the Triple-A level.
Horn, also 28, spent the entire 2026 campaign on the injured list after undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery in July.
In 2025, he had shown promise in limited action with Detroit, posting a 1.59 ERA over 11.1 innings in 10 appearances after being acquired from the Cardinals organization.
Originally drafted by the White Sox in 2020 out of Auburn, he previously pitched for the Red Sox in 2024.
Díaz, 26, joined the Tigers via waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks in late June.
The Venezuelan right-hander has shown high-velocity stuff and bat-missing ability in the minors but has struggled with command in brief major-league stints.
He appeared in a handful of games for Detroit in 2026 after being optioned to Toledo, where he continued to work through control issues.
With the 40-man roster now at capacity, the releases of Gipson-Long and Horn, combined with Díaz’s designation for assignment, reflect standard late-season roster management as Detroit prepares for the offseason.
Both released pitchers will become free agents if unclaimed, while Díaz could be traded, claimed by another club, or outrighted.
The transactions free spots for potential additions as the Tigers evaluate their pitching depth heading into 2027.
