The New York Giants received an encouraging update on edge rusher Abdul Carter ahead of their Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, as the team looks to build on its 4-2-1 record while navigating injuries on both sides of the ball.

After missing practice sessions on Monday and Wednesday following the bye week, Carter’s status drew attention given his elevated role in a defense that has had to adjust without star pass rusher Brian Burns, who is out for the season.

Head coach John Harbaugh addressed the situation directly, noting that Carter “should be fine, but he’s sick,” signaling that the illness appears manageable and that the second-year player is expected to be available when the Giants travel to Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.

Carter’s presence has grown in significance since Burns went down. While his sack total of two does not leap off the stat sheet, advanced metrics tell a stronger story: Pro Football Focus ranks him as the third-highest graded edge defender in the NFL this season.

He has also been a consistent source of disruption, drawing multiple holding penalties in recent games as opponents struggle to contain his speed and explosiveness off the edge.

Beyond the production, Carter has stepped into a leadership role.

After the Giants’ win over the Houston Texans, Harbaugh revealed that Carter addressed the team at halftime, urging teammates to “empty the tank” and leave everything on the field in the second half. That message resonated, and the defense responded accordingly.

The timing of Carter’s potential return is particularly relevant against an Eagles team in transition.

Philadelphia, sitting at 2-6 and riding a six-game losing streak, will turn to quarterback Joe Milton for his first career start after placing Jalen Hurts on injured reserve with blood clots and benching Tanner McKee.

Milton, a 6-foot-5, 236-pound dual-threat option signed off the Dallas Cowboys practice squad in mid-October, brings mobility that could test the Giants’ edge defenders.

He faced New York once before, in the 2025 regular-season finale, completing 7 of 13 passes for 73 yards with an interception in a 34-17 Giants victory.

Containing that athleticism while generating pressure will be a priority for a Giants defense that has leaned more heavily on Carter in recent weeks.

With both clubs missing their original starting quarterbacks for the remainder of the season, Sunday’s game carries added weight in the NFC East.

For New York, getting Carter back on the field would provide a boost to a unit that has shown resilience and opportunistic play.

Harbaugh’s optimism suggests the illness is not expected to sideline him, allowing the Giants to deploy one of their most disruptive defenders against a mobile quarterback in a contest that could shape the trajectory of both teams heading into the second half of the season.
