The Carolina Hurricanes will have some difficult decisions to make with their roster during the 2024 NHL offseason. A lot of attention will be on Jake Guentzel, whom the team acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins ahead of the trade deadline. But, he isn’t the only key player hitting free agency, as forward Martin Necas is as well.
Necas just completed a two-year, $6 million deal. He is set to hit restricted free agency on July 1st, and NHL insider Pierre LeBrun believes a change of scenery could be on the horizon. In a recent piece for The Athletic, he made a bold prediction, saying his money is on Martin Necas to be moving this summer.
That prediction comes on the heels of fellow NHL insider Elliotte Friedman sharing an update on the 25-year-old Hurricanes winger. According to Friedman, the Vancouver Canucks are showing an interest in Martin Necas.
There has been a lot of speculation on Necas’s future after comments that his father made. As shared by ARHockeyStats on X, his father shared displeasure with the role his son was playing with the Hurricanes.
Martin Necas wasn’t on the first forward line or the top power play unit. On top of that, he also claims that his son wants to be traded this offseason.
I’ll be very surprised if Martin Necas plays for Carolina in the next season. As his dad said, Martin wants to play in 1st line & 1st PP unit. His dad even said in an interview for @DenikSport: ,,Martin wants to be traded.” In my eyes, Necas is a great offensive winger. pic.twitter.com/GMqhREgSCv

Of course, things said by the father of a player need to be taken with a grain of salt. Had Martin Necas said it himself it would have carried much more weight. However, LeBrun even noted that Necas’s father “kind of blew the lid off” in his report.
“Now, I will also say that over the years I’ve learned father doesn’t always necessarily speak for son, but in this case, my sense is it’s probably pretty closely aligned,” LeBrun wrote.
This will be an interesting situation to keep an eye on. Martin Necas had a solid 2023-24 campaign with the Hurricanes, scoring 24 goals with 29 assists. In 11 postseason games, he had four goals and five assists, a career-high in a single Stanely Cup Playoffs.
Martin Necas is a player who could certainly take his production to another level with an expanded role. If the Hurricanes aren’t able to work out something to provide him with that, other teams around the NHL will.
